Properties of Hemp fibre
Highly durable and comfortable: Hemp is the source of extremely tensile and durable textile fibers. It is 4 times the strength of cotton. It is significantly less prone to abrasion due to its strong and lasting characteristics. Hemp, unlike other fabrics, is less amorphous, which means it holds its shape better. This makes it less prone to changing shape at the molecular level, which means knicks and abrasions are less likely to harm the fiber. When you wash and use your hemp clothing, the fabric actually softens and becomes more comfortable on the skin. Hemp wears in not out.
Breathable & insulating: Hemp has natural thermoregulating properties which allows an optimum amount of airflow, keeping you cool in the summer and allows you to warm up in winter. The core temperature of the body works with the fabric, not against it and so preserve your true body temperature.
Antimicrobial and anti-fungal: Hemp clothing is an excellent choice if you want to smell good all day. Hemp cloth is resistant to mildew and mold because of its antibacterial and anti-fungal characteristics, and it absorbs moisture. Hemp is highly resistant to mould, mildew, salt water and rotting, making it ideal for humid climates or travelling.
Hypoallergenic: Some people’s skin is extremely sensitive. Wearing the wrong cloth might cause a lot of itching and redness in various regions of their body. Hemp fabric, fortunately, is hypoallergenic. It does not irritate the skin and can even kill bacteria that come into contact with it. Hemp cloth is extremely sanitary as a result of its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Naturally moisture-wicking & odour resistant: Hemp can absorb moisture up to 20% of it’s own weight while still feeling dry to the touch. This is important for fabrics in contact with our skin, as perspiration is quickly absorbed and released. This means less moisture is retained and less odour-causing bacteria (body odour) can build up. Hemp allows for more wears between washes.
UV resistant: Excellent UV rating of hemp fibre protects your skin by naturally filtering UV light. It is 99.9% effective in protecting the skin from both uva and uvb rays. You can wear hemp clothing and go outside freely.
Biodegradable, non-synthetic and no microplastics: Hemp is a natural plant fibre. Unlike synthetic fibres (i.e., polyester, acrylic, or nylon) made from synthesized chemicals that are derived from petrochemicals, hemp clothes don’t contain or shed micro-plastics. Hemp clothing is 100% organically biodegradable, which means it can decompose naturally and does not contribute to pollution, minimizing our ecological footprint. Clothes that are not naturally biodegradable may spend a long period in a landfill when thrown.
Easy wash & care: Hemp is one of the lightest machine washable fibers and doesn’t require any special attention. It actually thrives on regular use and washing which improves its natural lustre and feel. Hemp can release stains more easily than other fabrics, and is also very fast drying, while retaining color better than any other fabric.
Eco-friendly hemp farming: Hemp can reverse the damage caused to the environment while offering us beautiful clothing and textiles to use. •Hemp is highly renewable and fast growing. Hemp matures in as little as 100 days and can be harvested up to three times per year.
• Hemp requires about half the amount of water comparative to growing cotton.
• In comparison to cotton, hemp may produce 200-250% more fiber on the same amount of land.
• Hemp helps to repair soil, quickly regenerate land and soil after each harvest. It can be grown in same soil for 20 years without soil depletion. It enriches soil with nitrogen and oxygen, restores ph levels and combats erosion.
• Its deep penetrating root system detoxifies the soil by removing harmful chemicals and pollutants like heavy metals, radioactive materials, pesticides, herbicides, explosives, and fuels from soil and groundwater.
• Hemp requires no pesticides. Hemp plants are natural pest repellents that deter insects and repel mites, fungi and bacteria. It is also a natural weed suppressant.
• Hemp plant does not take up a lot of space to grow and has a high land efficiency—it takes half the land area to produce the same amount of hemp compared to cotton.
• Hemp absorbs more CO2 than trees during its life cycle, absorbing 3-6 tons per acre versus 1-3 tons per acre for trees. Industrial hemp has been shown to absorb more co2 per hectare than any forest or commercial crop.
